Buildd For Debian/Hurd. Jeff Bailey happily announced that he has gotton the Debian build daemon run on his Debian/Hurd machine. That should help the hurd port keep up with the rest of the archive. Logs from this buildd are available on the buildd website above.

LSB Specification Update. Upon request Christopher Yeoh posted an update on the LSB Specification. There is ongoing work being done for a 1.0.1 release which will primarily be editorial changes and the fixing of a few very obvious errors. Both the released version 1.0 and daily snapshots are viewed here. There is also a database of results from LSB tests online.

New Potato Release Behind the Door. Joey is working hard on getting a new release of potato out. This will contain most security updates since the last potato release as well as a couple of corrected packages. The plan is to release 2.2r4 at the beginning of November this year. See his second take on the package list and send him comments if you feel that he's missing something in the current list.

Debian On DVD! Slashdot recently reported that LAN Comp Systems is distributing snapshots of the upcoming release Debian GNU/Linux 'woody' on DVD-R. There are source and binary-i386 DVDs, containing main, contrib, non-free and non-US. Looks like an interesting alternative to a 4-5 CD set. Jim Westveer explained how a DVD is mastered with Debian's tools.

FHS Transition. Joey Hess investigated his system together with an old tech committe decision from over 2 years ago on how /usr/doc will be transitioned. Joey says that we are currently near the end of step 2 and /usr/doc consists only of symlinks to /usr/share/doc. Except for very few packages the same applies to /usr/man and /usr/share/man while the transition for /usr/info hasn't yet finished.

First Debian-Package Of OpenOffice. Peter Novodvorsky announced the first successful build of OpenOffice #638c for Debian. It compiles into one single package which is 75MB large. Dooh. It is packaged lousily and reflects only a pre-pre-alpha stage, but it's a start. Use at your own risk! OpenOffice, however, has a modularized structure, and thus should be split up in smaller packages. However, license problems with JDK still remain. See the discussion above for details. Buildd für Debian/Hurd. Jeff Bailey hat freudestrahlend verkündet, daß er einen Debian Build-Daemon auf seinem Debian/Hurd-Rechner laufen hat. Das sollte dazu beitragen, die Hurd-Portierung auf dem gleichen Stand mit dem Rest des Archives zu halten. Logdateien von diesem Build-Daemon sind auf der obigen Buildd-Website verfügbar.

Aktualisierte LSB-Spezifikation. Auf Anfrage hat Christopher Yeoh ein Update der LSB-Spezifikation veröffentlicht. Es wird am Release 1.0.1 gearbeitet, das jedoch hauptsächlich aus Korrekturen bestehen wird. Beide Versionen, die veröffentlichte 1.0 sowie tägliche Schnappschüsse, werden hier eingesehen. Es gibt zudem eine Datenbank mit Ergebnissen von LSB-Tests.

Neues Potato-Release hinter der Tür. Joey arbeitet hart daran, ein neues Release von Potato zu veröffentlichen. Es wird die meisten Sicherheits-Updates seit dem letzten Potato-Release enthalten. Es ist geplant, 2.2r4 Anfang November in diesem Jahr herauszugeben. Lesen Sie seine zweite Auflistung der Pakete und schicken Sie ihm Hinweise, wenn Sie der Meinung sind, daß er in der aktuellen Liste etwas vergessen hat.

Auf dem Weg zum FHS. Joey Hess hat sein System daraufhin untersucht, inwieweit es mit einer alten Entscheidung des Tech-Kommittees von vor mehr als 2 Jahren übereinstimmt, in der es um die Art ging, wie von /usr/doc nach /usr/share/doc übergeleitet werden soll. Joey berichtet, daß wir jetzt nahe dem Ende der zweiten Stufe sind und /usr/doc nur noch aus symbolischen Links zu /usr/share/doc besteht. Mit Ausnahme von sehr wenigen Paketen gilt das gleiche für /usr/man und /usr/share/man, während die Überleitung von /usr/info noch nicht beendet ist.

Erstes Debian-Package von OpenOffice. Peter Novodvorsky hat das erste erfolgreich erstellte Paket von OpenOffice #638c für Debian angekündigt. Es ist ein einziges Paket, das 75MB groß ist. Puh! Es ist lausig gepackt und spiegelt nur einen pre-alpha-Status wieder, doch es ist ein Anfang. Benutzung ohne Gewähr! OpenOffice hat jedoch eine modularisierte Struktur und sollte daher in mehrere kleinere Pakete aufgeteilt werden. Die Lizenz-Probleme mit JDK bestehen jedoch weiterhin.
