No Ports Anymore? Some people were wondering why the main web page of Debian doesn't contain a link to Ports anymore. Josip Rodin explained that he removed the link, since he felt that it didn't seem to fit in the section it was in, and he couldn't quite find any other place to squeeze it in.

Debian at FOSDEM? The Debian Project has been offered a conference room for a Debian meeting during the next Free & Open Source software developer's European Meeting (FOSDEM). This event takes place in Brussels on February 16th and 17th. People who are interested in giving a talk or attending should contact Joey at events@debian.org.

Halfway non-free? Thomas Uwe Gruettmueller proposed to split some packages off of non-free and create a new bag partially-free, which could contain manuals that only fail DFSG 2, 3 or 6 -- such as the Emacs Manual. However, there's still an ongoing discussion about this issue. This has come up before, and for packages not entirely free there is the non-free repository.

Contacting Bug Submitters. Since some people were confused about the Bug Tracking System's behaviour we'd like to quote Colin Watson: If you are attempting to get in touch with a bug submitter, do NOT send mail only to nnnnn@bugs.debian.org. If you do that, the message will only be sent to the maintainer, and the submitter will never see it. Always Cc: either nnnnn-submitter@bugs.debian.org or the submitter's e-mail address directly if she should know about the mail.

Apache Belonging Into non-free? Rob Bos finally brought up an issue about the Apache web server on debian-devel. Its license says that the names "Apache Server" and "Apache Group" must not be used to endorse or promote products derived from this software without prior written permission. Debian, however, is modifying several files so that the Debian package could possibly be considered as derivative work. A similar discussion was covered on debian-legal about 8 months ago. The discussion is rather pointless, but it happened...

Unofficial Debian Testing FAQ. Several people are having questions with regard to the testing distribution. In an attempt to compile and present knowledge about the testing distribution, which is currently spread around those developers who read Anthony Towns postings most carefully, Jules Bean prepared an Unofficial Debian Testing FAQ.

Debian Menus Policy. This week, Rob Bradford brought up the need for menu files for all packages that provide X, Gtk, Gnome or KDE applications. Erik Steffl asked for better structuring menu items so it doesn't look as chaotic as it does now. Looks like somebody will need to go through all current menu items and check for their relevance and location, and go through all other packages and provide menu items for them.

New or Noteworthy Packages. The following new or updated packages were added to the Debian archive since our last issue.

• wavemon -- Wireless Device Monitoring Application.
• euro-support -- Support for the Euro character in your Debian system.
• fblogo -- Converts images to framebuffer-logo header file.
• ogle -- A DVD player with support for DVD menus.
• pyne -- A Python-GTK powered GUI mail-/newsreader.
• xslide -- An XSL editing mode for Emacs..

Security Updates. You know the drill, make sure you update your systems if you have one of these packages installed.

• fml -- Improper character escaping.
• icecast-server -- Remote root exploit.
• xtel -- Symlink attack.
• ssh -- Influencing login.
• wmtv -- Local root exploit.

Keine Ports mehr? Einge Leute haben sich gewundert, wieso die Hauptseite von Debian keinen Link mehr zu den Ports enthält. Josip Rodin hat daraufhin erklärt, daß er den Link gelöscht hat, da er der Meinung war, daß er dort nicht in den Abschnitt hingehört, in dem er sich befand, konnte jedoch keinen anderen Platz finden, um ihn dort hineinzuzwängen.

Debian auf FOSDEM? Dem Debian-Projekt wurde ein Tagungs-Raum für ein Debian-Treffen während dem nächsten Free & Open Source software developer's European Meeting (FOSDEM) angeboten. Diese Veranstaltung findet vom 16. bis 17. Februar in Brüssel statt. Diejenigen, die Interesse haben, einen Vortrag zu halten oder anderweitig daran teilzunehmen, sollten Joey unter events@debian.org kontaktieren.

Teilweise non-free? Thomas Uwe Gruettmueller hat vorgeschlagen, einige Pakete aus non-free herauszuspalten und einen neuen Bereich partially-free zu schaffen, der Handbücher enthalten könnte, die gegen die DFSG 2, 3 oder 6 verstoßen -- wie das Emacs Manual. Die Diskussion darüber ist jedoch noch nicht abgeschlossen. Die Idee gab es früher bereits und für nicht vollständig freie Pakete gibt bereits den Bereich non-free im Archiv.

Fehler-Submitter kontaktieren. Da sich einige Personen über das Verhalten vom Bug Tracking System (BTS) gewundert haben, möchten wir Colin Watson zitieren: Wenn Sie versuchen, mit der Person in Kontakt zu treten, die einen Fehler berichtet haben, schreiben Sie keine Mail an nnnnn@bugs.debian.org. Wenn Sie das nämlich machen, wird die Nachricht nur an den Paket-Betreuer geschickt und die berichtende Person würde sie niemals sehen. Schreiben Sie immer eine Kopie (Cc:), entweder an nnnnn-submitter@bugs.debian.org oder an die persönliche Mail-Adresse der Person, wenn sie von der Mail Kenntnis haben soll.

Gehört Apache in non-free? Rob Bos hat das Problem über den Apache Webserver schließlich auf debian-devel zur Sprache gebracht. Dessen Lizenz besagt, daß die Namen "Apache Server" und "Apache Group" ohne vorherige schriftliche Zustimmung nicht dazu verwendet werden dürfen, um ein Produkt zu unterstützen oder zu bewerben, das von dieser Software abgeleitet wurde. Debian modifiziert jedoch verschiedene Dateien, so daß das Debian-Paket unter Umständen als abgeleitete Arbeit bezeichnet werden könnte. Eine ähnliche Diskussion wurde vor ungefähr 8 Monaten auf debian-legal geführt. Die Diskussion ist ziemlich sinnlos, aber sie fand statt...

Inoffizielle Debian-Testing-FAQ. Viele Leute haben Fragen zur Testing-Distribution. In einem Versuch, das aktuelle Wissen zusammenzufassen und zu präsentieren, hat Jules Bean eine inoffizielle Debian-Testing-FAQ vorbereitet. Im Moment wissen diese Dinge nur diejenigen, die Anthony Towns' Mails aufmerksam lesen.

Menü-Regeln für Debian. In dieser Woche hat Rob Bradford den Bedarf für Menüdateien für alle Pakete angesprochen, die X-, Gtk-, Gnome- oder KDE-Applikationen enthalten. Erik Steffl fragte dabei nach einer besseren Struktur von Menüeinträgen, so daß sie nicht mehr so chaotisch aussehen wie es jetzt der Fall ist.
