Debian Weekly News #7 -- February 13th, 2002

Welcome to this year's seventh issue of DWN, the weekly newsletter to the Debian community. Last week was not as troublesome as before so this is only a short issue.

Debian Leader Election. Manoj Srivastava sent in a notice to prospective candidates for the Debian Project Leader elections. He intends to collect platform statements from the candidates, and publish them on a known location (somewhere under www.debian.org/vote) at the end of the nomination period and the beginning of the campaign, which makes it roughly the 27th of February, 2002. Voting shall start on the 21st of March, 2002, and shall last for 3 weeks, ending on the 10th of April. The first developer nominating himself is Raphaël Hertzog and the second one is Bdale Garbee.

PHP4 Orphaned. Petr Czech orphaned PHP4 last week. The main reason cited was the lack of time required to maintain these packages and fix bugs in it. Adam Conrad offered to take over these packages and Petr will sponsor his packages until he eventually passes the new-maintainer queue. Adam says that he is pretty familiar with the PHP source, and writes PHP modules on his own. Be warned, these packages need a rebuild or apt-get will remove them in favour of the new Apache packages.

Debian on Zaurus PDA. Joey Hess informed us that it looks like Sharp's Zaurus PDA (the one with the neat integrated keyboard) uses busybox dpkg and Debian packages. There's also a sourceforge project which covers open source development of tools, applications, and games for the Zaurus PDA.

Boot-Floppies 3.0.19. David Kimdon announced that the source of boot-floppies 3.0.19 was uploaded. The first problem with this upload was already found, unfortunately. The problem appears to be a modconf bug. It wasn't possible to load any network drivers on the idepci flavour. This can be avoided by building with the modconf in testing. Oh dear! Attila Nagy already reported the first severe problem.

Commenting on Draft 1.2 of GNU FDL. The Free Software Foundation is seeking comments on draft 1.2 of the GNU FDL. The draft is here and they also provide a unified diff against version 1.1. The FSF is asking for feedback from the Free Software community on this draft. Please send comments to fdl-comments@fsf.org. The comment period is open until 1 March 2002.

New Bug-Squashing Party next Weekend. Colin Watson announced the seventh Bug-Squashing Party to take place from February 15th to 17th. The effort will be concentrated towards bugs in base and standard. Frivolous NMUs will be avoided, but if there is a patch available and no activity for a while, an NMU might be in order. The party will be coordinated through the IRC channel #debian-bugs on OpenProjects Network, as usual.

Security Enhanced Debian. Russell Coker sent in a report about his effort on a Debian packages including SE patches from the NSA for a system running an SE enabled kernel. The kernel patch required is already been uploaded to the Debian archive. Russell put new versions of core utilities online already. He is getting very close to having a working SE system.

New or Noteworthy Packages. The following packages were added to the Debian archive recently.

Security Updates. You know the drill, please make sure that you update your systems if you have any of these packages installed.

Orphaned Packages. 9 packages were orphaned this week and require a new maintainer. This makes a total of 112 orphaned packages. Many thanks to the previous maintainer who contributed to the Free Software community. Please see the WNPP pages for the full list, and please add a note to the bug report and retitle it to ITA: if you plan to take over a package.

Willkommen zur siebten Ausgabe des DWN in diesem Jahr, dem wöchentlichen Newsletter der Debian-Gemeinschaft. Die letzte Woche war nicht so aufregend wie bisher, daher lesen Sie diesmal nur eine kleine Ausgabe.

Wahl des Projektleiters. Manoj Srivastava hat eine Notiz an zukünftige Kandidaten für die Debian-Projektleiterwahlen veröffentlicht. Er hat vor, Absichtserklärungen von den Kandidaten zu sammeln und diese an einer bekannten Stelle (irgendwo unter www.debian.org/vote) am Ende der Nominierungsperiode und Beginn der Kampagne, also etwa am 27. Februar 2002, zu veröffentlichen. Die Stimmabgabe soll am 21. März 2002 beginnen, drei Wochen dauern und am 10. April enden. Der erste Entwickler, von sich selbst nominiert, ist Raphaël Hertzog und der zweite ist Bdale Garbee.

PHP4 aufgegeben. Petr Czech hat letzte Woche PHP4 aufgegeben. Die Hauptursache dafür liegt in der fehlenden Zeit, die für die Pflege und das Beheben der Fehler benötigt wird. Adam Conrad hat angeboten, diese Pakete zu übernehmen und Petr wird sie für ihn hochladen, bis er es durch die Neue-Betreuer-Schlange (New-Maintainer queue) geschafft hat. Adam ließ uns wissen, daß er mit dem Quellcode gut vertraut sei und selbst PHP-Module schreibe. Seien Sie gewarnt, diese Pakete müssen neu compiliert werden oder apt-get wird sie zugunsten von neuen Apache-Paketen entfernen.

Debian auf dem Zaurus-PDA. Joey Hess hat uns darüber informiert, daß es so scheint als wenn Sarp's Zaurus-PDA (der mit der integrierten schnuckeligen Tastatur) dpkg von busybox und Debian-Pakete verwendet. Es gibt dazu ebenfalls ein Sourceforge-Projekt, das sich mit der Open-Source-Entwicklung von Werkzeugen, Applikationen und Spielen für den Zaurus-PDA beschäftigt.

Boot-Floppies 3.0.19. David Kimdon hat bekanntgegeben, daß der Quellcode der Boot-Floppies Version 3.0.19 hochgeladen wurde. Das erste Problem mit dieser Version wurde leider schon gefunden. Es scheint ein modconf-Fehler zu sein. Mit der aktuellen Version war es nicht möglich, die Netzwerktreiber der idepci-Version zu laden. Das kann jedoch dadurch verhinder twerden, daß die Version von modconf aus testing beim Zusammenbauen verwendet wird. Oh weia! Attila Nagy hat zudem das erste schwerwiegende Problem berichtet.

Anmerkungen zum Vorschlag der GNU FDL 1.2. Die Free Software Foundation ist auf der Suche nach Anmerkungen zur ihrer vorgeschlagenen Version 1.2 der GNU FDL. Der Vorschlag befindet sich hier, sie stellen ebenfalls die Unterschiede als unified diff gegenüber der Version 1.1 zur Verfügung. Die FSF wünscht sich Rückmeldungen zu diesem Vorschlag von der Freien-Software-Gemeinschaft. Bitte schicken Sie Kommentare an fdl-comments@fsf.org. Bis zum ersten März können die Anmerkungen noch einfließen.

Neue Bug-Squashing Party am nächsten Wochenende. Colin Watson hat die siebte Bug-Squashing Party für das Wochenende vom 15. bis 17. Februar angekündigt. Die Arbeiten werden sich hauptsächlich auf Fehler in base und standardkonzentrieren. Freizügige NMUs sollen zwar vermieden werden, wenn jedoch ein Patch verfügbar ist und keine Aktivitäten zu sehen sind, wird möglicherweise ein NMU das richtige sein. Die Party wird wie bisher über den IRC-Channel #debian-bugs im OpenProjects-Netzwerk koordiniert.

Sicherheits-Angereichertes Debian. Russell Coker hat einen Bericht über seine Bemühungen geschrieben, Debian-Pakete mit sicherheits-angereicherten (SE) Patchen von der NSA zu erstellen, die zusammen mit einem sicherheits-angereicherten Kernel (SE Linux) laufen. Der dazu benötigte Kernel-Patch wurde bereits ins Debian-Archiv aufgenommen. Russell hat zudem neue Versionen von wichtigen Werkzeugen online gestellt. Er steht kurz davor, ein funktionierendes SE-System zu haben.

Neue oder beachtenswerte Pakete. Die folgenden Pakete wurden kürzlich zum Debian-Archiv hinzugefügt.

Sicherheitsaktualisierungen. Sie kennen es schon, bitte stellen Sie sicher, daß Sie Ihr System aktualisieren, falls Sie eines dieser Pakete installiert haben.

Verwaiste Pakete. 9 Pakete wurden diese Woche aufgegeben und benötigen einen neuen Paket-Betreuer. Damit gibt es insgesamt 112 verwaiste Pakete. Vielen Dank an die bisherigen Betreuer, die damit zur Freien-Software-Gemeinschaft beigetragen haben. Die vollständige Liste finden Sie auf den WNPP-Seiten. Fügen Sie bitte eine Notiz an den jeweiligen Fehlerbericht, wenn Sie vorhaben, eines dieser Pakete zu übernehmen.
