Debian GNU/Linux

Problems with keys and fonts 12.1.2001
After the upgrade from potato to woody to unstable the Debian boxes have some flaws concerning keys, fonts and encodings. The following list sums up current problems:
  • Displaying german manpages with man -l foo man-db does not display german umlauts anymore. This doesn't seem to be a bug in the pager less since you won't see umlauts when redirecting the manpage into a file. This changes if you run man-db within screen
  • When using screen umlauts are displayed. However, not all combinations of umlauts will be visible, you must not group two umlauts: thus "gemäß" becomes "gem", "müßte" becomes "mte".
  • After the upgrade the backspace key in an Xterm doesn't behave as BS anymore.
  • After the upgrade, the ALT-key doesn't work in Xterm anymore, it beeps and adds a character but doesn't forward the proper key to bash.

Hopefully done now that sarge is out for a while and etch is to be released soon.

Gerstensaft

Support for Gtk2 15.11.2006
Version 2 of Gtk is about for quite a while and will replace version 1 entirely soon. It'd be good if Gerstensaft could be ported forward to the new version. Holger Levsen has already started with this.
Done on 22.11.2006

Conversion complete.

Stock buttons 15.11.2006
Gtk2 support buttons from stock which do not only come with a text on the button but also with a little pixmap which can be easily recognised. It would be nice if Gerstensaft would use these instead of regular ones where possible.
Done on 22.11.2006

Stock buttons added, will appeare in 0.3.

boot-floppies

Implement new installation routine 31.10.2000
The Debian installer needs an update. Information and management is on debian-boot@lists.debian.org. The system will be used for a post-woody release and is called debian-installer. The system has already been started.

dtaus

dtaus and Euro 12.11.2000
The current status is that dtaus ought to be euro-complient but it wasn't tested. This needs to be done soon since Euro is coming nearer and nearer.
Done on 6.1.2002

Done with version 0.5

ffis e.V.

Calender application 16.12.2000
For ffis e.V. we need some sort of calendar application. It needs to have a web-based frontend and should have export interfaces for handhelds from Palm. It needs to cover boths multiday events as well as one day events like monthly and annual meetings. It also needs to allow making remarks.
Done on 19.1.2001

It's implemented now.

libisofs

ISO-9660 library 28.9.2002
For bootloaders and stuff (especially on mips/mipsel architectures) it would be nice to have a library similar to libe2fs that reads iso images.

Grab SILO or PALO - Both have enough ISO9660 support to load a file from an ISO image - Then look at the existing ARCBOOT code and make some kind of minimalistic "filesystem detection" of the devices media.

Thiemo Seufer, however, believes that a library is too much bloat.

Done on 8.12.2002

Thimo Seufer has added ISO-9660 support to delo, the DECstation loader, so this is finally done.

newmail

Support for non-printable chars and encoding 2.12.2000
These days german umlauts are permitted in From-lines, but need to be encoded specially like =?codingstyle?=code... newmail of course does not support that. This is quite modern while newmail is one old program from the elm suite.

Deutsche Webseiten korrigieren 23.10.2000

Reorder events page 10.12.2000

Currently the events page at http://www.debian.org/events/ is wrongly sorted. For each year the months are well sorted but the years are in the wrong order, i.e. 2001, then 2000 instead of vice versa.

Joy explained to me that the reason for this behaviour resists in the way the general routine works, it works well for news, security updates and votes which contain only past entries.

Somebody needs to modify the get_future_event_list().

Done on 6.1.2001

Ich habe es jetzt selbst gemacht, da musste nur ein zusaetzliches (und hier ueberfluessiges) reverse @list geloescht werden. *brr*

Banner page 10.12.2000

We need a web page containing the banners Debian provides for various sites (like Linux.com, /., sourceforge, 32Bitsonline etc.).

Done on 23.4.2001

I've installed the banner page at http://www.debian.org/banners/.

Press Notification 10.12.2000

Debian gets mentioned in the press and on various websites, including awards and reviews. These should be collected somehow.

Somebody needs to design a web framework on which I can add and move links and notices (without links like "Linux Journal, issue #2 March 1999, pages 33ff. "Debian leads the World").

Done on 8.4.2001

I've installed a proper page at http://www.debian.org/News/press/ today.

Fix events page 17.12.2000
On the page for a single event you often read "(none)" for some issues, this sucks and gives a bad view of Debian. Denis Barbier has provided me with a fix that I first have to understand...
Done on 19.1.2001

Joy has fixed it by removing support for it. :)

xfig

Exclude Layer 31.10.2000

In current versions of xfig you have the ability to use layer (depth) for certain elements of the figure. Unfortunately if you export or print a figure all depths are included and not only the ones visible to the screen. Additionally fig2dev (from transfig), which does the conversion behind the scenes, isn't able to exclude depths as well. This would be the first step implementing this feature.

Additionally I'd like to know the command chain required to convert a figure in a random format (i.e. what is xfig calling if creating a an EPS- or a GIF-file?)

Done on 16.11.2006

This is achieved in current versions.

zenirc

Support for passwords 17.12.2000
One problem with ZenIRC arises if you are trying to connect to an IRC server that requires you to type in a password. ircII will perform but ZenIRC will fail. While normally irc-servers don't require a password it is needed when you are using muh as proxy - otherwise anybody could hijack your IRC connection.
