In current versions of xfig you have the ability to use layer (depth) for certain elements of the figure. Unfortunately if you export or print a figure all depths are included and not only the ones visible to the screen. Additionally fig2dev (from transfig), which does the conversion behind the scenes, isn't able to exclude depths as well. This would be the first step implementing this feature. Additionally I'd like to know the command chain required to convert a figure in a random format (i.e. what is xfig calling if creating a an EPS- or a GIF-file?)
